Precious metals

The Bureau of Metrology carries out professional and related administrative tasks, applying scientific methods and knowledge, within its competences defined by the Law on Control of Precious Metals (Official Gazette of Montenegro, No. 40/10 and 40/11).

Pursuant to Montenegrin regulations, precious metal items are those made of platinum, gold, palladium, silver or alloys thereof with palladium, iridium and other metals of prescribed fineness.

Each and every precious metal item placed on the market of Montenegro is subject to mandatory testing and hallmarking on the official premises of the Bureau of Metrology.

Once the degree of fineness and the presence of the prescribed markings are established in the relevant testing, hallmarking is applied to confirm the correctness of items made of precious metals.

By implementing normative solutions from the field of control of precious metals, the Bureau of Metrology firmly stands in its intention to protect customers, both through the control of precious metals placed on the market of our country, and by raising customers’ awareness that when purchasing any such item, one should check whether the items bear all legally prescribed marks (importer’s/ manufacturer’s mark, appropriate fineness mark and state hallmark).

The Laboratory for precious petals has been established within the Department of Precious Metals to conduct tests of precious metals types and their alloys, as well as to determine the degree of precious metals fineness.

All tests and hallmarking are carried out by the Department of Metrology on the basis of the Application for testing and hallmarking of precious metal items.
