The Bureau of Metrology is organizing the „Open Days“ event to host elementary and high school students in the period from 7 to 25 May 2018.

During this time, the laboratories of the Bureau of Metrology will be visited by 800 students from eight elementary and four high schools from Podgorica, Nikšić, Herceg Novi, Cetinje, Berane, Rožaje and Žabljak.
„Open Days“ will be organized as part of the celebration of the World Metrology Day which is commemorated in over 80 countries on 20 May.
The theme for this year’s World Metrology Day is Constant evolution of the International System of Units.

The theme was chosen with regard to one of the biggest changes of the International System of Units (SI) since its establishment, which is expected in November 2018. At the meeting of the International Committee for Weights and Measures, held in October 2017, a resolution recommending redefinition of four basic units of the International System of Units (SI) – kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole was adopted. In the new International System of Units, kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole will be redefined in terms of constants.

The result of this change will be a simpler definition of the whole International System of Units and the abandonment of the definitions of the last three units based on the material artefact – the International Prototype of the Kilogram. The remaining three units – meter, second and candela have already been defined in terms of the constants. These changes will come into force as of 20 May 2019, on World Metrology Day.
During the last year’s „Open Days“ event, the Bureau’s laboratories were visited by 500 students from eight elementary and six high schools.

In addition to the changes in definitions of the International System of Units, the students will also be presented with the national measurement standards and will attend simple measurement procedures in national calibration laboratories in the field of metrology of mass, pressure, length, electrical quantities, temperature, time and frequency, volume as well as in the Laboratory for Electrical Power.
